What's the Point of a Peace Treaty?

How did they set about trying to construct a peace treaty which could become a lasting peace? The Treaty of westphalia in 16 forty eight was the first attempt. It took, i think, partly because of the way in which people went into war and tried to defend their positions. But actuall, it also made the war receptive to negotiations throughout. That's the point, I think, of legal arguments, that they're open to negotiation.
