The Tyranny of the Majority

In the early 19th century, Americans have a real Republican spirit to them with a small R sense, right? And they also very strongly believe in the importance of defending people's rights. That if it were the case that instead over time, that sort of small R Republicanism were to wane and people became more passive subjects rather than active citizens then we could see soft despotism.
