The main character the second samurai that comes into Gumo he really begins to question okay why did I cling to this sword for so long. They kind of represent this stubborn attachment to the old ways that have clearly or that are clearly dying out in the world beyond their own little school. So you can see the cruelty that kind of follows out of that just the baseless assumption and continuation of all traditions without really understanding what was at the core principles or if there's any real moral value to them anyway.
