Jonathan larson died less than 24 hours before opening night. His death was an indescribable shock to his family, his friends and the entire theatre community. The cast performed rent for close friends and family, only, dedicating the performance to their fearless leader. After the last note played, the room rose for a standing ovation. It was am memorial and a release. The next night would be their first public performance - it sold out. Then the next night and the next night after that, all sold out. Between january 20 sixth and april first, 19 96, every show sold out.
