In your book, Bound by Bondage, you claim that Dutch slavery came to the North American Northeast long before the Dutch had actually established the colony of New Netherlands. Nicole: Why did the Dutch establish this colony? What was its importance going to be for their larger Dutch Atlantic Empire? You do see them providing things like grain and other provisions. But this isn't a huge enterprise. It really was a fledgling place.Nicole: In addition to being this outpost for provisions in Peltry for the larger Dutch Atlantic world, your big aspect of the New Netherlands economy was of course slavery.
