The Rise and Fall of Lai Chau Cescu

Chau Cescu was a longtime member of the Communist Party who became General Secretary in 1965 and then President in 1967. Richard Nixon took notice, as President he pursued a policy called differentiation. Romanians were not seeking to break away from Soviet influence, but they were seeking a certain amount of autonomy. That year the Soviet Union sent tanks into a liberalizing Czechoslovakia to clamp down on mass protests known as the Prague Spring.
