Gladwell's son Luca, who is now doing his PhD in philosophy at the University of Texas, went to work as David Blaine's personal assistant. He had to learn how to keep Russian models away from each other and how to care for an albino alligator. And it was a wonderful learning experience, much better than going to progressive school because he had to learn about Stand Your Ground laws. Malcolm has always found the most interesting stories to illustrate what you don't do that Dad isn't doing. Gladwell: "I grew up with community theatre. Community theory is the whipping boy of every pretentious intellectual"
In a live conversation taped at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, Malcolm chats with his old friend and New Yorker magazine colleague, Adam Gopnik, about Adam’s latest book, The Real Work: On the Mystery of Mastery. In the book, Adam follows numerous masters of their craft to find out just how they do what they do—and discovers that there is mastery all around us. In this episode, Malcolm and Adam highlight a few of the folks from the book, and what they have to teach us.
