Vaccines and the Cholera Pandemic
Hofkin was a Russian jew who trained in odessa and developed his skills in paris. He injected himself publicly to show his confidence in the preparation. People began lining up in the streets of calcutta for the new vaccine. Hofki noted that his vaccine appeared to reduce cases, but it didn't seem to reduce mortality in people who were infected. But before he could do so, he was drawn away from cholera for good by a crisis in bombay. That was bubon plague, which had not visited a pandemic on the world since the black death. The first case was discovered in september in the quarters of a grain merchant at the city's docks
In the 1890s, Waldemar Haffkine worked valiantly to develop vaccines against both cholera and bubonic plague. Then an unjust accusation derailed his career. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Haffkine's momentous work in India, which has been largely overlooked by history.
We'll also consider some museum cats and puzzle over an endlessly energetic vehicle.
