Being able to reversibly control the amount of friction inside a mechanism in real time could have applications in all kinds of industries from electronics to micro robotics. One way of achieving that could be with high-tech lubricants like the ones that Susan works on. But if we can manipulate friction in such ingenious ways there's something else I want to know. Is there ever a situation where we could get rid of friction completely and what would that look like? That's a hard question but the answer basically is no.
