Jay Parini: I had no idea that you had a different initiative before what you ended up doing for your PhD. You studied African and Chinese students language and race mediated interactions in the universities within Beijing's higher educational district Haidian. Can you provide some background information to help our listeners contextualize your book? He says it was curious watching the movement of African students into the Chinese space, trying to improvise the idea or improvise with the idea of an alternative Chinese modernity. And then often either being disappointed or inspired by their Chinese interlocutors who themselves seem to be committed to Western educational modernity.
