Lutheran colleges and universities in the U.S. are not likely to look at your CV if you don't have a doctorate from University of Chicago, he says. "It's a sad, it's a sad story," Neschigen adds. He was frustrated by his lack of success as a Reformation scholar when he had a sabbatical years ago. His job now is to show what Lutherans were really trying to do with their religion - they weren't just about counting doorknobs.
