CHAPTER

The Evaporating Microscopic Black Hole Could Destroy Earth

The LHC has been creating a microscopic black hole every second its life. Such a black hole could destroy the earth in as little as 300,000 years. Humanity might still very much place a high value on our home planet and prefer that it continued to exist. But what if Hawking was right and microscopic black holes do evaporate? It could still pose an existential threat. An evaporating microscopic black hole could give a low energy vacuum bubble from the Higgs field just the boost it needs to grow and ruin the universe.
