Maria Mantell says Elizabeth Jane Howard's novels are timeless. She thinks her contemporaries like Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark were maybe a bit spiky in tone. Mantell: A great writer, capital G, has to stand a distance and almost judge their characters. And I think especially if you look at the writings of Kingsley Amos - that is biting satire.
