The Government's Counter-Extremism Strategy Is Wider Than It Needs

Ministers began tackling violent extremists with a strategy they called prevent. In 2011 the then-home secretary extended prevent to extremists who don't support violence. Prevent must also tackle the insidious impact of non-violent extremism, which can create an atmosphere conducive to terrorism and popularise views that terrorists exploit. But some will tell the High Court at a hearing next month that the definition of 'non-violent extremism' is wider than it needs to be. He says that prevent could be counterproductive.
