The Cost of Movies in the 1930s
The Motion Pictures Greatest Year campaign was launched in 1938 to promote movies as great. Some journalists were snide about it from the beginning, saying that money could have been better spent on making films great. The public wasn't electrified by the campaign, though over 32 million quiz booklets were distributed to moviegoers. In hindsight, maybe if Hollywood had waited a year to grow about their greatness, they would not have had to protest quite so much.
