When the great migration got underway, most Jews and Italians had only been in the United States less than 30 years. In those early years of the great migration, nobody saw blacks as moving in on white neighborhoods. They lived cheek by jowl with Irish, Italians, Poles, Jews and many other people who had only recently arrived themselves. Both groups faced their own ordeal of integration in the American cities they now called home.
