Justine Frischmann co-founded Swade with her then-boyfriend Brett Anderson and served as its original guitarist before Bernard Butler arrived. Elastica's debut single, The Punky Stutter, arrived in the fall of 1993 to near-instant acclaim. By the winter of 1994, Elastica had already issued a follow-up single, Line Up, and developed a bespoke sound borrowing heavily from late 70s post-puck bands like Wire and The Stranglers.
