I really did buy this whole concept of a meritocracy. All you have to do is be smart and work really hard, I thought. But that combination did not equal maximize in my success. So the hard part was figuring out what were the other components of the success equation. You can't sit there and just assume people know that you're smart. Those were lessons that nobody told me about, but they make all the difference in maximizing your success.
