John's Gospel - The Book of Signs
John's gospel has a rich literary structure, and there are ways in which we might relate other episodes in the gospel to this. Jesus wants people to see beyond the spectacle, to recognize the significance of what is taking place. The presence of six water pots has provoked a lot of symbolic interpretation. This sign could be paralleled with the final sign of the raising of lazarus. Both involve sabatical themes and themes perhaps of resurrection,. as we have already mentioned.
