CHAPTER

Antidepressants and the Gut Brain Axis

Mental health is really linked to our gut. Gut microbes are essentially like mini-pharmuses, producing thousands of chemicals every hour in order for our body to function properly if they're fed right. So most of the serotonin we get is produced by bugs in our gut and so they produce this chemical, which then goes to the brain. And there's many other chemicals that are constantly going back and forth, as well as the microbes influencing the immune system, which also goes into the brain. A gut friendly diet, like a Mediterranean high fiber diet, was actually more effective than antidepressants for this.
