The Importance of Art in the West

In the past 50 years, have things gotten less beautiful? Do we just build less things on the margin than we used to? I think it has personally. We've kind of lost touch with these societal systems that used to encourage beauty for the sake of knowing deep down without metrics or anything to justify it. If you could pick one intervention there to kind of reverse this, is there anything that comes to mind that you think would be pretty high leverage?
