The performative nature of identity means that games of identity at all levels have become far more contentious,. increasingly theatrical, and unfortunately violent. Whether it's America, Brazil, England, India, or China, and Russia, identity has made a comeback on a major scale. And it doesn't look like it's going to get any better soon.
