The Atlas blue butterfly has the most chromosomes of any eukaryotic diploid creature at 448 to 452 chromosomes. Despite claims of living fossils, there is no evidence for any extant species existing for more than about 3 million years. The longest one was supposedly a tadpole which looks pretty much like the shrimp today.
