The second edition was published 35 years later, and the introduction is absolutely worth a read to anybody who hasn't read the second edition. In it, martin simon appear to have meddled somewhat and are more philosophical about their contribution to organization studies. They acknowledge that the main change from the original book, of course, is the social context from the late 19 fifties. But they do offer possibly the definitive definition of an organization that i have ever read. Some use it as a guide to organizational theory prior to 19 58, as a useful source of propositions about organizations. And to others, it is an icon of a prehistoric age.
