Marxism and the Proletariat

Is it the idea that capitalism collapses under its own weight and then the proletariat picks up the pieces? Or is it the proletariat grabs the pitchforks and kills the capitalists? I think a little bit of both. It doesn't necessarily have to involve killing the capitalists. The struggle is not shooting each other in the streets, although that is what has happened,. But it's taking control of the productive apparatus for the people.
