The Myth of Reconstruction as a Failure
The Dunning School of Thought was the dominant approach to Reconstruction Scholarship for much of the 20th century. It pushed a lost cause narrative, starting in the Jim Crow era and pushing a lost cause story. The idea that black citizens were stepping into their rightful civic and economic roles and those roles were being wrenched from their hands.
