The french king philip was forced to defend his own people from the invading english army. His knights were terrifying shock troops, heavily armored men on powerful horses. They knew that when the french army caught up with them, the enemy would be thirsty for revenge. Both sides had reason to be confident for one of them. That confidence was utterly misplaced. In some ways, it was very much of its time. In other ways, it offers us a very modern cautionary tale.
