I was forced to try my hardest to speak during my 20s and some of my 30s purely because I was a sole parent of my four children. They needed me and there was absolutely no other option but for me to force myself to speak when this was necessary on my children's behalf. My selective mutism has become more intense as my children have grown older and become more capable of speaking for themselves. It really can be restorative to have periods or periods during the day or different phases that you're going through in your life where you have less social interaction that you'll have to do. Look, sometimes it can be distressing but that can be because of the neurotypical standards
