Sabelius was always at war with himself, whether to be a modernist or a romantic. He lived through a period of astonishing change in both the world and in music. After 19 27, for the final 30 years of his life, he wrote almost no music. But what sabilius left us in this symphony is that perfect combination of romanticism and modernism. The combination is incredibly hard to pull off, and so few composers were able to do it.
