Inmates were ordered to work in nearby factories and build new properties nearby. The warden's mansion was built out of limestone from the quarry. When working, or when being sold out for for labor, the inmates used these opportunities to try to escape. In 18 68, there was headline news that broke out in town because guards discovered a tunnel that had been dug out.
