Dark Matter
Zwicky started with the idea of calling a missing mass and within a few years the term changed to dark matter. It's not giving off light, we can't see it with our telescopes or we can see the gravitational effect this extra mass has on objects that are luminous. We're inferring it's there from its influence rather than seeing it directly. Light is the only way that we can really test what's out beyond our solar system which is why it's so elusive.
