Acute Severe Hypertension
Acute severe hypertension is broadly described as blood pressure over a certain threshold. The arbitrary threshold that's been used is 180 for systolic and either 110 or 120 for diastolic. So we start with a certain value, let's pick 180 over 120. And then the next step is really to define whether there is acute target organ damage. This is very common. It's a very common cause of visits to emergency departments throughout the world. But here it's important that it be recognized as an acute problem which is typically part of microvascular involvement.
