The Importance of Mental Training on Race Day

If you're focused on the wrong things in that moment, then your physical training isn't what's going to get you across the finish line. In fact, the mental is probably going to keep, hold you back and you probably would have a tendency to drop out long before you should have or to decrease your effort long before that finish line. One of the examples I love to use about how a race can be totally thrown off by absolutely nothing physical is if you have not trained to run without music.
