Don't do what Mike did. Cut everything to the bone then embark on a big project like getting a house. The advantage that an office job has is that kind of coasting that you can do. With the self-employed stuff, it's like if I don't do the work, I don't get paid. So this is the difference with being self-employed versus having a job where what you were saying before about the relative security of either.
