Aquinas 101 - Course 2: Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy

CHAPTER

The Importance of Normative

In philosophy, the word evil sometimes gets used for anything that's bad. When a tree falls on a car, philosophers don't say that's evil. But if you hear me say being handicapped is an evil, please don't get angry and accuse me of saying that handicapped people are evil. Those are very different claims. I will sometimes use words like norm and normative. For example, sickness is aNormative concept because sickness is a kind of badness. Although admittedly it might sound a bit old fashioned, sickness is one of the evils that afflict human life,. but everyone would laugh at you.
