Bio Orthogonal Chemistry - The Origin Story

The origin story of bio orthogonal chemistry actually started with my interest in the biology of complex carbohydrate molecules and we call them glycans now. I learned a lot about sugar chemistry when I did a postdoctoral fellowship at UC San Francisco which is a medical center. It became clear that one of the hallmarks of cancers is a change in the structures of cell surface sugars but it was impossible to see those changes without cutting patients open or destroying their cells. So, I came up with an idea for how to basically mark the sugars on the surface of cells with imaging probes that would allow you to see those sugars without destroying the cells.
