The Pressure of the Whips on MPs
It's hard to express the high drama and complete disbelief at what was happening in Westminster. The country had already been divided by a ratio of 52 to 48, over the decision to leave the EU. As these votes showed, the very people in charge were just as divided on what to do next. One government source simply told the Guardian, last one out, turn off the lights. It's a time that has left its mark on those who participated on either side of the debate. Here's how one ERG backing MP remembers it: "People were being bullied if the Whips had something on them"
