There are other literary clues in the text that this is really bad and egregious. The whole book until this point is all about away saying, i'm going to bring him up. So it just seems like part of the plot that what away really wants is for his people to know him. And then they do the very opposite thing and use the same words for it. When aaron says, tear off the gold rings in the ears of your wives and bring them to me - those are the same word used for the tabernacle construction. These are the things that the people are supposed to be using to build the place where god dwells, and instead they are building this other thing.
