The base of the republican party has been increasingly populos. The tea party period was a key moment in this because that's when the kind of nihilistic attitudes of republican voters really set in. And it was not coincidentally, upon the election of the first black president at the top of the party, you had a kind of a corruption that set in. Those two things have turned the republican party into an authoritarian party.
