The Importance of History in Defence
You read classics and ancient history at the University of St Andrews. What lessons from history were on your mind when you were in your role as defence secretary? It was certainly extraordinary dealing with Iraq and Syria to be dealing with almost exactly the same places that Alexander the Great had marched his army through, that Roman legions had tramped through. How far eastwards should the west go? How far should the influence stretch? Having got that influence, how do you maintain it? You never cease I think to be an ancient historian.
