I'm sympathetic with parents. Parents have a lot of things on their mind. It's important for people to own their pasts, and there will be some limitations that we've developed. But those limitations are not the end of the story. They don't determine our futures. In fact, the only thing that can determine our futures is ourselves. The purposes we find in life and that we develop are the road to a fulfilling future.
