How to Think About Rewards in Habits

I think what you're referring to is sort of the old distinction between positive and negative reinforcement, right? So removing something that's unpleasant can be a kind of a reinforcement. And when we think of rewards these days, I think this is what economists have done for us. The problem is that the literature on monetary incentives, you can get people to do things a few times. You can motivate them. But there's not much evidence that rewards help form persistent habits in the way that we want them to. If you encourage people to make a behavior easier, reduce the friction, there's pretty good evidence that the behavior will persist.
