The Politics of Asbestos Exposure in Libby

WR Grace continued to secretly monitor lung disease in their workers with a confidential report in 1969 concluding that 17% of our one to five year service group have or are suspect of lung disease. In 1980 reports on the mine showed that levels of asbestos exposure were 100 times what OSHA then deemed to be safe. Despite this, despite these reports, nothing seemed to be done about it. There is some speculation that politics played a role. Under Reagan, the Grace Commission was established to find ways to cut funding for the EPA.
