William of Normandy was trying to gain power in England. He called for help from his chivalric neighbors, but they didn't want to be the first to say no. The one person who answered said it wasn't an unambiguous offer of friendship and support. William insisted that if the count joined the invasion, he would have to leave his son as a hostage.
