Tolkien grew up in Worcestershire and was fascinated by local dialect. He entertained his younger brother with stories about the local people. Tolkien's inspired me to read is history, because he conveys such a realistic sense of a background that you can explore. That has enabled me to use Tolkien as a kind of conduit to wider learning.
