The History of Stonehenge
Archaeologists excavating almost a century ago found burnt human bones, the remains of cremation burials. The current consensus is that the aubrey holes originally held small, upright stones - probably blue stones. Roughly 500 years after this first stage of construction, between 26 20 and 24 80 b c, the second stage of construction began at stonehenge. This was when the monument mostly took on the form it retains to day.
