The book includes the custom house, which is a sort of lightly autobiographical introduction. It's my understanding that somewhere in that custom house essay or maybe in another letter, he puts forth this story that he he actually like was inspired to write this book by discovering some embroidered Scarlet A or and or discovering a historical record of this happening.
