What Is the Ultimate Common Good?
The state is sort of a threat to that. But I think that this good is something private and personal to me. It does not have to do with a larger community out there. And if we then ask what freedom consists in, it is the freedom to be able to participate in this common good. We would feel rather set back if we were not allowed to participate in that which is communal here. That is how ancient our ancient Athens understood what freedom meant.
