Assyria and the Medes
Assyria was perhaps the first true military super power. Their heavy handed approach to maintaining their empire made them incredibly unpopular. The medeans expanded rapidly and moved to occupy the lands of elam, gathering its scattered and angry peoples beneath its banner. Soon they were a formidable force, with a burning hatred for the assyrian empire everything it stood for. All they would need was an opening, and that opening would come in the death of the great king ashor banipal.
