The Rule of Religion in a Liberal Democracy
Liberals have been engaged with religion from the very beginning, as you can imagine. It's not possible to understand any political thought until fairly recently if you didn't know something about religion. The interesting thing is how many early liberals were protestants. They believed that it inspired and encouraged critical thinking skills which are so important to an engaged citizenry. And they said this repeatedly, protestantism is a higher form of religion than catholicism.
